Round 3 News

06/06/2009

Premier League finalists James Wade and Mervyn King were two of the big-name casualties in Friday's 3rd Round action in the UK Open in Bolton. The tournament, known as the 'FA Cup of darts', certainly provided some third-round shocks as Peter Manley ended James Wade's hopes of glory as he edged out the world number two 9-8 at the Reebok Stadium. 'One Dart' looked to be in complete command when he moved one leg away from victory at 8-5. However, Wade proceeded to reel off eight legs in a row to set up a thrilling finish. The defending champion had his chance to win it but failed to take out double tops. Manley showed him how it should be done to clinch victory. However, the biggest upset of the round came soon after when King, ranked four in the world, was dumped out by Michael Bernard.

Double 18 clinched Bernard a superb 9-8 result that left him in tears afterwards having failed to get over the finishing line in the previous leg.

Former world champion John Part was another to fall, the Canadian losing a final-leg thriller against Colin Lloyd.

There were no such problems for Phil Taylor, who began his bid for for a third UK Open title with an easy 9-1 defeat of Manchester-based rookie Lee Williams.

Raymond van Barneveld also progressed, recovering from an early 2-1 deficit against Ken Dobson. He will next face Andy Hamilton, who knocked out another Dutchman, Michael van Gerwen on Board One.

Stoke trio Adrian Lewis, Andy Hamilton and Mark Frost all made it through but Wayne Mardle was beaten 9-2 by Mark Walsh.
